On The Same Page Boston is excited to announce that your donations have accumulated to over two thousand books that will be donated to The Mather School of Dorchester! It was an honor to partner with Tatte, which made donating easy and accessible, and we are grateful to everyone who donated! Thank you !
We live in a time when environmental awareness and sustainability are a part of the conversation more than ever before. Not only are corporations beginning to design and produce products that consider negative environmental impact, but consumers are also consuming with sustainability in mind. The publishing industry is no different. The publishing industry wreaks havoc on the environment due to the materials and energy required to produce books, not to mention that many books are single-use products – read once and then discarded. On The Same Page Boston decided to focus this spring’s campaign on collecting used books with this in mind.
According to data published by Nordsense, 320 million books end up in landfills across the United States of America each year; that is about 640 thousand tons, or roughly twice the weight of the Empire State building, of books that are discarded in landfills each year. Additionally, according to an article published by the BBC, 767 million paperback books were sold in the United States in 2023, with an average of 1 kilogram of carbon emissions released in the manufacturing of each book. 767 million kilogrammes of carbon emissions are more than enough to supply 150 thousand homes with power for over one year. There are ways in which consumers can aid in reducing the environmental impact attributed to the consumption of books.
On the Same Page Boston – with its spring gently used book donation campaign in partnership with Tatte – is working to shift the paradigm on how books are consumed.
