Here at On the Same Page, we’re all about bringing books to kids who deserve them. If you’re feeling inspired by the work that we do, but aren’t located nearby, why not start a free little library in your community?

Perhaps you’ve seen them dotted around your city as you walk by. Usually situated on a sidewalk or near a park, these little libraries have a “give or take” model that allows people to give their old books in exchange for some new material. Typically, they’ll look a bit like birdhouses, with a small glass or plastic window on top of a latch. Keep reading to find out how to make one for yourselves with just two simple steps.

  1. Pick a spot where people are gonna see your little library.

You’ll want to put your library on the sidewalk or in an area easily visible to the public. Using your own property is easiest, as permissions for property use fall under your jurisdiction. Consider also reaching out to public parks, or even a familiar neighbor who has a spot more easily accessible by those passing by!

  1. Build a little library

Little library kits are purchasable at littlefreelibrary.org. Or, for those looking for something more within the budget, consider up-cycling old furniture to construct the box.

  1. Enjoy your little library!

Consider installing your little library on a post. And check up on your library every now and then! What’s in there might surprise you!

At On The Same Page, we're committed to bringing stories to kids who deserve them. With little libraries, you can bring stories to your community.
