Holiday gift guide: book edition

It's nearing that time of the year.

There's a cold nip in the air, bright lights and wreaths are wrapped around street lights, and a chilly breeze from the Boston Harbor swoops through the city's high-rises. Thanksgiving is around the corner, followed by the many different cultural celebrations in December. And if you have the means, you may be considering how to participate in charitable giving this holiday season.

If you check out our donation page, you will see hundreds of books requested by the Mather School. However, a few titles in particular will expand students' education, support their ongoing classes, and most importantly, make them smile.

Here is a charitable giving gift guide for the upcoming holiday season.

The Mather School has an Illustrative Math (IM) curriculum in place. These titles will support the math community.

  • Grandma’s Purse

  • My Heart is Filled with Happiness

  • Pablo’s Tree

  • Little Red Hen Makes Pizza

Once just covering elementary school, the Mather School has now expanded to K-6. The sixth-grade curriculum includes Greek mythology, and these books will contribute to the new program.

  • Aru Shah and the End of Time

  • Sal And Gabi Break the Universe

  • Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Vampire Hunting

  • D'Aulaires Book Of Greek Myths

This year, the Mather School will have three authors visit and meet students. They are Raul the Third, Kwama Mbalia, and Susan Tran. Access to their written work will be incredibly important to make these visits as educational as possible.

  • ¡Vamos! Let's Go Read

  • Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky

  • Cilla Lee-Jenkins: The Epic Story

The following books are a part of the school's ongoing dual language program, in which students learn the foundations of Vietnamese language and literacy. Reading books about Vietnamese culture is a vital aspect, and the Mather School hopes students will continue learning the language to earn the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy.

  • My Ong Ngoai’s Garden

  • Where Thuong Keeps Love

  • Con Ăn Cơm Chưa? Have You Eaten Yet?

Lastly, the students have a few items on their wishlist. These are a handful of titles the students of the Mather School have expressed interest in.

  • Slime 101

  • 1000 Facts About Space

  • Soccer GOATS

  • Creepy Crayon

  • Nameless City: The Stone Heart

If you are in the giving mood this holiday season, consider donating to our ongoing campaign to place diverse books at the Mather School.
